Meet the Board of Directors >> Joe Shurley

Out in Warren County, on a road that bears his last name, Jefferson Energy Director Joe Shurley lives next to his family’s old home place, a house that was built in the late 1700s. Deep roots are what make Joe such an asset to the Board of Directors at Jefferson Energy Cooperative.

Until about 10 years ago, Joe primarily farmed the 230 acres where he lives. But then he saw a need to provide a valuable service to the community around him. His primary business now is the maintenance and repair of farming equipment, something Joe has always enjoyed doing. “If you like what you do and can make a living at it, that’s great,” says Shurley.

As for his role as a Director at Jefferson Energy, Joe says he wanted to serve because of a general interest in the cooperative. (37680-01) That interest has since bloomed into a true passion for helping people with co-op concerns. Joe says, “I enjoy meeting people. And being able to help them while maintaining the interest of the co-op is what it’s all about.”

Joe has been a Director since 1995, and served as Chairman for two years. In that time, he’s seen a lot of changes both in Jefferson Energy, and the industry as a whole. “We’ve come a long way since I started. I’m proud that we’ve been able to adapt to the changes in the industry, and maintain our high level of service at the same time,” Shurley says.

When not working, Joe spends his time collecting and restoring antique tractors. He has 11 completely restored and about 30 or so “in the works.” “It’s just something I’ve always enjoyed doing,” says Shurley. He also likes spending time with his family. His wife, Fae, was employed at Briarwood Academy for more than 19 years and loves riding horses. Their son, Mark, is a computer technician and has been employed with UPS for more than 10 years.

Joe Shurley is a valuable part of the Jefferson Energy Board of Directors and credits the employees of the co-op for making his job easier. “We’ve got a great organization with all the right pieces in place and I hope to
be a part of it for a long time to come.” He adds, “If there’s anything I can do, I hope our valued customers know they can count on me to keep their best interests at heart.”
